Inspired by the book Gathering Moss by Robin Wall Kimmerer, I have been searching for sphagnum moss on Ilkley Moor. In its ability to capture carbon, sphagnum moss is inordinately precious to the balance of the world and yet it is so small; clearly discerning the shapes is almost beyond the limits of what the eye can see.

Rather than try and make works which are representative of sphagnum and what it looks like, we want to give a sense of what sphagnum does and gives. We have started creating shapes by forming them around stones to give a sense of carrying and holding, and through this creating the balance of the whole.

The sphagnum on Ilkley Moor is flat-topped bog-moss, sphagnum fallax.
